Credit & Copyright: NPOD Snow And Lava:Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho, USA is one of the better examples of a flood basalt area in the US. Like the Deccan Traps in India, the vast lava fields of Craters of the Moon are the leftovers of eruptions that cover the land with basalt lava. In some spots, the basalt deposits are over 10,000 feet deep! This shot, taken in late spring, captures a snow covered lava field reaching up to the foothills of the Pioneer Mountains.
